An existing lake on the property was the starting point for the design of the V&H House, located in the outskirts of São Paulo. Situated on a sloping plot, the house was conceived as a journey that gradually reveals itself, articulating architecture, water, and landscape at different levels.
At the lowest point of the land is the main house, conceived as a single-story residence with an L-shaped layout, facing north and positioned close to the lake. The clients’ desire for a “house that floats on the water” translated into the creation of reflecting pools around the perimeter of the residence, establishing a visual and sensory continuity with the existing lake.
The entrance to the main house is marked by large pivoting doors and an internal garden, which organizes the transition between exterior and interior. The social area unfolds along a single axis, bringing together the living room, dining room, and gourmet veranda, all directly connected to the pool. Large glass openings allow for extensive integration with the landscape, while generous eaves ensure sun protection and thermal comfort.
At the far left of this axis is the family room, which can be integrated into or isolated from the rest of the social area by means of folding doors. Next to it are the master suite and the guest suite, separated by a garden. Both open to the view through wooden panels, which allow for control of light, privacy and integration with the outdoor area. To the right of the social area, the games room connects to the gourmet veranda, followed by the gym and spa, making up the leisure area of the main residence.
At the intermediate level of the land is a second lake with four independent bungalows, one for each of the clients’ children. Positioned in a slightly misaligned way, the volumes create different framings and perspectives of the landscape. Each bungalow has two suites and a common living area, opening completely to the water and the surrounding vegetation.
A carefully designed wooden walkway crosses the landscaped lake and connects the bungalows to each other and to the path leading to the main house. The structural solution required precise engineering work, allowing the volumes to appear to float on the water’s surface and reinforcing the idea of a path and conviviality along the site.
Above, at the highest point of the site, are located the service block and the sports courts. From that point, the bungalows and the main house gradually reveal themselves amidst the landscape.
